How To Install & Remove Bicycle Pedals

Understanding the intricacies of pedal installation and removal is paramount for any bicycle enthusiast. Whether you’re preparing your bike for shipment, replacing old pedals, or servicing pedal bearings, it’s essential to recognize that left and right pedal threads are uniquely designed. The right side has a right-hand thread (tightens clockwise), while the left side features a left-hand thread (tightens counterclockwise), often indicated by “L” and “R” stamps.

When removing pedals, position the wrench for optimal leverage—less than a 90-degree angle with the crank arm—and turn counter-clockwise on the right or clockwise on the left. For installations without pedal wrench flats, utilize an 8mm hex wrench on the backside of the pedal thread. Remember to view from the correct orientation: standing to the right of your bike for the right pedal and vice versa.

Begin reinstallation by greasing threads generously and finger-threading before tightening with a wrench. Use appropriate torque (around 360 inch-pounds) to secure each pedal.
